Detail Itinerary
Experience the stunning views of the Himalayan peaks as you fly into Paro Valley (2,300 meters). After completing visa formalities at Paro airport, meet your personal guide and driver. Explore Paro Rinpung Dzong, known as the "fortress of the heap of jewels," which houses the district monastic body and government offices. Visit Ta Dzong, once a watchtower for Paro Dzong, now the National Museum of Bhutan, showcasing artifacts dating back to 4000 BCE. Take a leisurely stroll through Paro town, lined with traditional Bhutanese buildings. Spend the rest of the day relaxing and soaking in the beauty of this serene kingdom.
After a hearty breakfast, head to the golden Punakha Valley. Stop at Tachhog Lhakhang, known for its Iron Chain Bridge over the scenic Pa Chhu (Paro River). The cool breeze and vibrant prayer flags create an invigorating atmosphere, making it a visual treat.
Next, take a break at Dochu La Pass, 3,100 meters above sea level. Enjoy a hot coffee at the Dochu La cafeteria while admiring the breathtaking panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges. If the skies are clear, the majestic Himalayan peaks to the northeast will be fully visible. Marvel at the 108 stupas beautifully set against the blue sky. Continue towards Punakha, and upon arrival, visit Chimi Lhakhang. Walk through fields of rice and mustard to reach the hilltop temple of the Divine Mad Monk, enjoying the picturesque agricultural landscape along the way.
Hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten: Start your day with a scenic drive and a small hike to Nyzergang, leading to the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. Begin the hike through rice fields along the Mo Chhu river, reaching the stunning stupa at the valley's upper end. Perched on a high hill, this chorten offers spectacular views and showcases beautiful traditional architecture. Built by the Queen Mother, it aims to dispel negative forces and promote peace. The moderate hike takes about an hour from the parking area.
Visit Punakha Dzong: After the hike, explore the magnificent Punakha Dzong, known for its striking beauty and intricate carvings. Nestled between the Pho Chhu (Male River) and Mo Chhu (Female River), this 1637-built structure has a rich history and played a key role in resisting Tibetan invasions. It also houses Bhutan’s most sacred relic, the “Rangjung Karsa-pani.” Don’t miss crossing the nearby longest suspension bridge in Bhutan over the Pho Chhu River.
Return to Thimphu for an exciting day of sightseeing. First, visit the National Institute of Zorig Chusum, where students practice the Thirteen Arts and Crafts. Watch them painting, embroidering, working with wood, masonry, sculpture, and carpentry. Next, explore the National Folk Heritage Museum. This museum connects visitors with Bhutan's rich folk heritage and rural history through exhibits, demonstrations, educational programs, and documentation of rural life. Finally, we will visit the Memorial Chorten, a beautiful and significant monument in Thimphu.
Today, we will visit Tashichodzong to experience the Bhutan Festival, known as Tshechhu (Thimpu festival). Tshechus are vibrant celebrations where Bhutanese people share their values, myths, and spiritual beliefs through dance dramas. These festivals often feature a grand display of a giant silk Thangka, depicting Guru Rinpoche or other significant Buddhist figures.
The deep faith and devotion of the people make these festivals truly special. It's also a chance to join thousands of Bhutanese in a lively, carnival-like atmosphere. Later, we will visit Kunselphodrang to see the Giant Buddha Statue. In the evening, we'll take a stroll around Thimphu's main street and market area. We'll also visit the archery ground to watch the locals play their national game, complete with songs and dance.
Early in the morning, we'll set off for Paro and check into your hotel. After a quick refresh, we'll drive to Chelela Pass, Bhutan's highest motorable pass. The journey through Hemlock forests offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas. At Chelela Pass, enjoy the stunning sight of Jumolhari Mountain. We'll have a picnic lunch and hoist some prayer flags. For those feeling energetic, there's an option to hike from Chelela Pass to Kela Nunnery. We'll then return to Paro.
After breakfast, we will embark on a hike to Tiger's Nest, also known as Paro Taktsang. This iconic monastery, perched on a cliffside 3,000 feet above the Paro Valley in Bhutan, is a sacred site and a marvel of architecture. Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche, who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan, flew to this location on the back of a tigress. The hike offers stunning views and a glimpse into Bhutanese spirituality, making it a memorable part of the journey.
